Faust

Brookfield Zoo / Let the Lions Roar

Let the Lions Roar chronicles the evolution of Illinois' Brookfield Zoo from 1919 through 1997, the year in which the book was published. Faust (at that time known as Quick + Faust) was retained by the Zoo to design this 280-page history book. The project was a true collaborative effort as countless hours were shared between designers, writers, photographers, illustrators and others pouring through a wealth of photography, articles, letters, maps, buttons, environmental signage and other archival materials to sort them into cohesive, well-paced groupings for each chapter. Faust approached the project with the intent of creating an engaging history book that could be read both in a linear fashion or with what we call "multiple points of entry." That is, to engage the reader no matter where they opened the book. To do this, we paid acute attention to every detail—pacing, hierarchy, typography, callouts, sidebars, support illustrations, conceptual photos, right down to folio design. Faust provided concept, design, art direction, production and print management.
