Faust

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts / "Meet Me at the Center of the Earth" YBCA Exhibition Book

When Faust agreed to collaborate with Chicago-based artist Nick Cave on the publication that went along with the 2009 large-scale multi-media exhibit of his work at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, we agreed that it needed to be more than just an exhibition catalog. It had to be a book that would chronicle his work to date and match the heft, scale and detail of the individual pieces of his work. Of course, his body of work being entitled, "Soundsuits," we talked about the sound the book would make when dropped on a table: THUD. Then we agreed that to fully convey narrative, craft, size, and motion, we had to provide multiple perspectives of each piece. Obviously, this would impact length (and budget); the result was a 240-page book, the largest ever produced by the YBCA, which sold out months before the show's end. Because the budget didn't allow for the use of special print processes, clearly the effective use of imagery (read: the artist's work) was to credit for the sell-out. Faust provided concept, design, art direction, production and print management.
