This billboard diptych was created start a conversation around the tough subjects addressed within Nick Cave’s exhibition Until by teasing out the title’s meaning — a double play on the phrase “innocent until proven guilty” or “guilty until proven innocent.” By removing the “I” in both these words, the viewer is forced to decide where on the spectrum they really are. It suggests imperfection and humanity in us all and allows us to more simply recognize us all as equal. It is a way to initiate the exhibition’s mission to take care of each other outside the museum walls and in the streets themselves.
