Nick Cave: Sojourn, 2013

140 page, Hard cover
Essays by Kyle Macmillan and William Morrow
Published by Denver Art Museum

The book within a book is an experience itself and ties directly back to the exhibition by the same name, the artists work and his process. Sojourn includes a 40-page journal that chronicles the making of the exhibition and features interviews by Kyle MacMillan with many of Cave’s collaborators. It nests comfortably within a die-cut void from the first 40 pages which were salvaged from the the book’s own make-ready sheets (waste paper from the print process). The book’s cover is a reflection of the exhibition’s title wall and incorporates the same pattern as well as letterform die cut. Each “chapter” of the book reflects its respective gallery space of the exhibition and is led by an illustrated essay on the making of a representative piece.
