This 240-page survey of Mickalene Thomas’ work uses a large-scale format and spot metallic gold ink throughout to showcase her extensive body of work that spans painting, collage, print, photography, video and immersive installations. To help convey the layered process of the artist, the cover is printed on a linen cloth and wrapped in a clear jacket with the artists name spanning both front and back covers printed with metallic gold ink. Thomas’ work has influences ranging from 19th-century painting to popular culture, and articulates a complex and empowering vision of womanhood while expanding on and subverting common definitions of beauty, sexuality, celebrity and politics. This major survey publication further affirms Thomas’ status as a key figure of contemporary art.
